My Take

Steve Reeves was the original muscular movie hero, and you can draw a straight line from him to Schwarzenegger, who openly idolized him. What strikes me is how classically proportioned and almost statuesque he looked, the polar opposite of the chemically inflated physiques that came later, which is why bodybuilders still hold him up as an aesthetic ideal. His Hercules essentially created the sword-and-sandal boom. He could have chased Hollywood harder but largely stayed in European productions, which gives him a slightly mythic, underappreciated quality I find appealing.

Overview

Steve Reeves (January 21, 1926 - May 1, 2000) was an American bodybuilder and actor who became one of the most famous physiques in the world. He won the Mr. America, Mr. World, and Mr. Universe titles before becoming an international film star, most notably playing Hercules in the 1958 Italian peplum film of the same name. His success helped launch the sword-and-sandal genre and inspired generations of bodybuilders.
