Taisuke Yamaoka

Taisuke Yamaoka stands 172 cm. In professional baseball, where scouts have historically treated height as a proxy for pitching potential, that is short. He has pitched for the Orix Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball anyway, and that fact does more damage to the height-equals-pitcher assumption than any argument could. Born in Hiroshima in 1995, he belongs to a small but persistent category of pitchers who cannot rely on leverage and therefore have to be better at everything else: sequencing, deception, the mechanics of transferring force from the ground up through a smaller frame. Watching that kind of pitcher is, for me, more interesting than watching a tall arm overpower hitters. There is visible engineering in it. Nothing about a shorter pitcher's success is automatic, which means every bit of it had to be built deliberately. I find that far more instructive than raw physical gifts, and quietly satisfying to see rewarded at the top level of the sport.
