Tak Sakaguchi

Tak Sakaguchi occupies a strange and useful position in Japanese action cinema. Born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1975, he broke through in Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus, and since then has worked not only as an actor but as a director, fight choreographer and stuntman. That combination matters more than it sounds. Most performers execute a fight; a smaller number design one; almost nobody does both at a level where the two feed each other. He has returned repeatedly to Kitamura's orbit, appearing alongside Hideo Sakaki and collaborating with Yudai Yamaguchi and Yuji Shimomura. Read as a group, those credits describe a scene rather than a resume, a cohort of people who decided that if Japanese action could not compete on budget it would compete on physical craft and staging. I like that he is essentially a technician who happens to be in front of the camera. It gives his work a legibility that spectacle alone rarely achieves.
