My Take
Sumo is supposed to be a sport of slow accumulation. You grind through the lower divisions, you wait your turn, you earn the next rank one tournament at a time. Takerufuji ignored that script. Born in 1999 in Goshogawara, Aomori Prefecture, he passed through jūryō, the second-highest division, in a single tournament and landed straight in the top division. Then in 2024 he made himself impossible to overlook. At 184 cm, with a background running from Tottori Jōhoku High School to Nihon University, he came up through the classic pipeline, but nothing about that pipeline explains a rise that steep. What interests me now is the harder part. Sudden ascents in sumo tend to collide with the body's own timetable, and expectation in this sport is a physical weight, not just a psychological one. His highest rank so far is maegashira 4, which means the story is genuinely unfinished. I would rather watch an unfinished story than a settled one.
