My Take
Timbaland is, to me, one of the true architects of how popular music sounded in the 2000s. Raised in Norfolk, Virginia, he built a signature out of stuttering, off-kilter rhythms so distinctive that you can name him within a bar or two. What impresses me is that he never chased trends; he bent the trends toward his own sound, reshaping hip-hop and R&B in the process. He is also that rare figure who works both behind the board and on the mic. His Grammy and Time 100 recognition feel less like a peak than the world finally catching up to what producers knew all along.
