Togi Makabe

Togi Makabe, born Shinya Makabe on 29 September 1972 in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, is New Japan Pro-Wrestling through and through — trained there, and a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, two-time IWGP Tag Team Champion, two-time NEVER Openweight Champion and NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Champion. The belts tell you he was trusted at the top of the card. What they do not tell you is why he stuck. Makabe built a character on raw menace: the chain, the unhurried stomping, the sense that finesse was somebody else's problem. Then Japanese audiences discovered his enthusiasm for sweets and desserts, and instead of puncturing the act, it made him beloved. I think that only works because the intimidating half was never a bluff. He really did wrestle like that. A performer who can be genuinely frightening in the ring and genuinely warm outside it has two careers running at once, and Makabe has made both of them last.
