My Take

What strikes me about Tomi Adeyemi is the confidence of placing West African mythology at the very heart of mainstream young-adult fiction. Debuting at number one on the New York Times list while still in her twenties, a Harvard graduate who also commands a stage as a speaker, she clearly isn't content just to write quietly. I'm less impressed by the awards than by the nerve behind the project: turning silenced histories and voices into propulsive story. To me she reads as a writer building doors for the next generation rather than guarding her own, and that generosity is what makes me keep watching her.
