Toshio Suzuki

Toshio Suzuki, born August 19, 1948 in Nagoya, co-founded Studio Ghibli and now serves as its chairman. Outside Japan, Ghibli is usually spoken of as a director's studio, and the producer's name tends to fall out of the sentence. I think that is a real loss of understanding. Animation is not a medium where talent alone reaches an audience — someone has to decide how money, time, and several hundred people get arranged over several years so that a drawing becomes a film that actually ships. That job is closer to authorship than the credit suggests, and Suzuki has held it across the studio's entire life. He shared the 2024 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for The Boy and the Heron, which is the kind of prize that looks like a single achievement and is really the visible tip of decades of institution-building. A Keio graduate who spent a career making a fragile creative enterprise durable: that, to me, is the more interesting story than any one film.
