Vimala Raman

Raman fascinates me as a genuine border-crosser. Born and raised in Sydney, university-educated, a former model, and yet she chose to make her name in South Indian cinema, acting across Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films. That is an enormous linguistic and cultural leap, and her 2006 Tamil debut in Poi took real nerve. Reinventing yourself in an industry far from home, in languages you did not grow up with, demands a discipline I admire. She represents the quiet globalization of cinema, and I think performers like her deserve far more attention.
