My Take
Walter Brennan is my favorite kind of recognition story: the supporting player honored as essential, not incidental. Winning three Best Supporting Actor Oscars, still the only man to do so, he proved that the actor holding up the edges of a film matters as much as the star at its center. Coming from Lynn, Massachusetts and working many jobs before acting, that hard-earned texture shows in his weathered, prematurely aged characters who anchored so many Westerns. I value substance over flash, endurance over flash-in-the-pan brilliance. His three statues and his Walk of Fame star are well-earned tributes to the craft of the great character actor.
