My Take

To me Wayne Shorter sits at the very summit of modern jazz, and not only for his saxophone. What I prize most is his mind as a composer. His writing never settles for the obvious phrase, reaching instead for something vast and almost cosmic in scope. Twelve Grammys and the Polar Music Prize confirm the recognition, but what stays with me is that he kept experimenting deep into a six-decade career, refusing to coast. When he died in 2023 the music did not stop, it simply kept echoing. I consider him one of the rare artists who single-handedly widened the frontier of his art.
