My Take

What fascinates me about Woody Allen is the sheer durability of his voice. Across eight decades he has essentially made the same nervous, talkative, death-haunted comedy over and over, yet it never stops feeling distinct. As a writer he is, to my mind, untouchable; the record number of Original Screenplay wins and nominations only confirms what every page of Annie Hall already proves. I find his legacy complicated and the debates around him unavoidable, but purely as a student of screenwriting, I keep returning to his work the way musicians return to scales. It remains the grammar of the modern comic film.
