I find XXXTentacion one of the most difficult artists to write about honestly. His legal troubles were serious and should not be sanitized, yet the music itself, raw lo-fi confessions about depression and alienation, clearly reached kids nobody else was reaching. Dead at twenty, he left behind a catalog that feels less like a career than an open wound. What strikes me is how completely he collapsed the distance between artist and listener; there was no persona to hide behind. Whether you see him as a cautionary tale or a generational voice, his influence on emo-rap is undeniable, and I suspect it will outlast the controversy.
