My Take
Yoshimi Watanabe's career reads like a map of Japanese political restlessness: the Liberal Democratic Party, then founding Your Party, which he left as leader in 2014 over an 800 million yen loan scandal (prosecutors later declined to charge him) and which then dissolved, then Nippon Ishin no Kai, then independent from 2019. It would be easy to call that inconstancy. I read it differently. A man who cannot sit still inside an existing party and builds his own instead is at least acting on conviction, and starting a national party from nothing is far harder than it sounds. Born in Nishinasuno, Tochigi, educated at Chuo University, the son of a well-known politician, he received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in 2023. Praised and criticized, but never quiet.
