Yōsuke Tsuruho

On paper Yosuke Tsuruho looks like a straight line: born in Osaka in 1967, University of Tokyo, Liberal Democratic Party, a seat in the House of Councillors. The detail that interests me is the bend in that line. He ran for the lower house in 1996 and lost, then won a Councillors seat in 1998. Losing an election is a brutal form of unemployment, because the title and the income vanish overnight and the failure is entirely public. What a candidate does in the two years after that tells you more than any diploma. He has held national office ever since, which suggests those two years were spent well.
