Yū Asakawa

Yu Asakawa, born in Tokyo in 1975, has a claim to influence that almost no other voice actress can make. Alongside her conventional anime work, she provided the vocal samples for Megurine Luka, one of Crypton Future Media's Vocaloid singing synthesizers. Think about what that actually means. A normal voice role ends when the recording ends and the performance is fixed. Supplying a synthesizer voice is the opposite: you hand over your raw vocal material and then thousands of strangers, most of whom will never learn your name, spend the next decade making it sing songs you had no part in writing. The performance is yours and not yours simultaneously. Vocaloid culture spread far beyond Japan, so there are listeners in countries where she has never worked, in languages she never recorded, who know her voice intimately without knowing it is hers. She was previously with Arts Vision and later went freelance. That career detail is ordinary; the other one is not. She was present at the moment technology stretched what a voice actor's reach could mean.
