Yuji Yamamoto

Yuji Yamamoto is the kind of politician who never trends. Born in Kōchi City in May 1952, trained as a lawyer, a Waseda graduate — he won a seat in the Kōchi Prefectural Assembly in 1985, served a single term there, and then moved up to the House of Representatives as a Liberal Democratic Party member. That trajectory reads like a professional decision rather than a calling: use the prefectural assembly as a proving ground, then go national. The lawyer background is the part I find most telling. Committee work in the Diet is largely a contest of who has actually read the text, and someone with legal training arrives with that muscle already built. He also served as financial services minister in Abe's first cabinet and as agriculture minister from 2016 to 2017. He is now a former member. It is tempting to read that as a lack of impact. I read it differently. Legislatures run on people who show up for the unglamorous machinery for decades, and being unmemorable in that specific way is closer to a compliment than an insult.
