Yukari Itō

Say the title "Koyubi no Omoide" to anyone in Japan over a certain age and they will hum it back to you. That song belongs to Yukari Itō, born in Shinagawa, Tokyo in 1947, and it placed her at the center of the most glamorous stretch of Japanese popular music. What interests me is not the hit itself but the decades that followed it. Most singers who define an era get frozen inside it and quietly disappear once the era ends. She did not. She still performs, still carries the same song into rooms full of people who first heard it as teenagers and are now grandparents. Singing one number for half a century sounds easy and is not; it demands that you find something new in it every single night or the audience will hear the boredom. That she has managed it is the real achievement here, more than any chart position from the 1960s.
