Yumi Suzuki

Yumi Suzuki, born 2 December 1991 in Kitami, Hokkaido, plays second for Loco Solare, the curling team skipped by Satsuki Fujisawa. Bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics, silver in 2022. Two Olympic medals in a sport that most of the world only remembers every four years, and that undersells what her team actually did. Curling rewards a strange combination of traits: precision under enormous pressure, and the social intelligence to keep four people calm while the clock runs down. Loco Solare became famous partly for being visibly warm with each other on the ice — chatting, snacking between ends — and then executing final shots with genuinely frightening composure. Suzuki is part of that engine, not decoration on it. The detail I keep returning to is Kitami itself: a small city in northern Hokkaido producing an Olympic medal team twice over. That is not luck. That is a local culture built patiently over decades.
