Yuri Chinen

Yuri Chinen was thirteen years old when Hey! Say! JUMP was formed in 2007. He is thirty-two now, and he is still there, still in the middle of the same group. Say that out loud and it sounds unremarkable; think about it for a second and it is astonishing. Almost nobody stays in one pop group from adolescence into their thirties, in the same role, without either burning out or being quietly moved aside. What he is best known for is acrobatics — backflips, tumbling runs, the kind of thing that reads as effortless from the cheap seats. It is not. That vocabulary belongs to the body of a teenager, and it starts filing complaints the moment you turn twenty. To still be throwing it at thirty-two means an enormous amount of invisible maintenance: conditioning nobody sees, recovery nobody counts, a hundred small refusals to take the easier version of the routine. He is the smallest member of the group, and he uses it. On stage he takes up the most vertical space of anyone precisely because he is the one who can. Then he moves to a drama set and works in the opposite register entirely — still, small, interior. Performers who do a bit of everything usually end up doing none of it well. He is the counterexample. He comes from Hamamatsu in Shizuoka, and went to Horikoshi High School, the school that has processed generations of working child performers. Nearly two decades in, the surprising thing about him is not the flips. It is the durability underneath them.
