My Take
Andrea Bocelli's story is the one I reach for whenever someone tells me it's too late to start over. A University of Pisa law graduate who could have settled into a respectable legal career, he instead bet everything on his voice and won Sanremo's newcomer prize at thirty-five. Ninety million records later, the bet looks obvious, but it wasn't then. I admire how he refuses to choose between opera and pop, treating both as vehicles for the same warmth. Critics sometimes sniff at crossover artists; I think Bocelli did something harder than purity, because he made millions of people who never owned a classical record fall in love with the tenor voice.
