My Take
Aya Shimazu, born in Kumamoto Prefecture in March 1971, left home at fourteen to apprentice under the lyricist Tetsuya Hoshino, debuted in 1986, and first appeared on NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen in 2001. She has spent decades in enka, a genre built on vocal control rather than image, and she is widely regarded as one of the most technically formidable voices working in it, comfortable stretching well beyond enka into pop and show tunes. Careers like hers are almost invisible to the entertainment press because nothing happens to them. There is no arc, no comeback, no fall. There is a person who sings extremely well, year after year, and an audience that keeps showing up. In an industry that increasingly rewards being talked about over being good, a quiet private life and a formidable voice strike me as an honourable trade.
