My Take
Born in February 2005, Ayu Shimotani is basically the definition of a new-generation gravure idol — still a teenager when she stepped in front of the camera, which honestly takes more nerve than most people give credit for. She came up as a live idol with Ochamental Party before Weekly Playboy's editors picked her out as one to watch in 2024, and at 174 cm she stands out in any lineup. Her Instagram handle "ochapa_ayu" has this loose, unbothered energy that makes you think she's just genuinely doing her own thing rather than playing some carefully managed persona. I find that refreshing. She's barely gotten started and yet here she is, already carving out a presence in a genre that rewards both boldness and patience. I'll be watching where she lands in a few years — she feels like someone who's going to surprise people.
