My Take
Bob Mackie is one of those rare designers whose work everyone has seen even if they do not know his name. His glittering, feathered creations for Cher and Elton John, plus eleven straight years dressing The Carol Burnett Show, made him the quiet architect of an entire era of glamour. What I admire most is the generosity of his craft. Mackie never competed with the performer for the spotlight; he made them shine. The Tony Award and CFDA Lifetime Achievement honors feel almost like belated thanks. He is, to me, the consummate behind-the-scenes magician.
