My Take
Ashton comes across to me as a genuinely substantial diplomat. From Up Holland to the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, holding that heavy brief from 2009 to 2014, she operated at the crossroads of competing national interests. I imagine the patient, unglamorous work of brokering agreement among so many parties, and I respect that. Honours like Lady of the Garter and the Order of St Michael and St George underscore the regard she earned. I value politicians who build trust through quiet integrity rather than spectacle; the unseen negotiating table is where the world often turns.
