My Take

Chet Atkins is the rare musician whose influence outgrew his own instrument. As a fingerpicker he was sublime, but as an architect of the Nashville Sound he reshaped what country music could be, ushering it into adult pop's mainstream. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction are almost footnotes to me. What I find most compelling is his generosity as a producer: he had the ear not just to play, but to draw the best out of others. Mister Guitar earned that nickname by changing the very sound of an era.
