My Take

Chikao Ohtsuka had the kind of voice that made villains impossible to hate. It was sly, gravelly and faintly amused at itself, so even when the character was despicable you enjoyed his company. Japanese audiences knew him instantly as the scheming Nezumi-Otoko in GeGeGe no Kitaro and as the first Goemon Ishikawa in Lupin III, two roles that could hardly sit further apart. He worked on stage and screen as well as in the recording booth, and you can hear that training in the timing and the breath control. He died in 2015 at 85. His son Akio Ohtsuka went on to a voice career of similar stature, which makes the family sound less like a coincidence than an inheritance.
