My Take

Christopher Lloyd is proof that a so-called character actor can own a culture's imagination outright. Doc Brown is one of cinema's perfect comic creations — manic, tender, completely committed — but I am equally drawn to the craftsman underneath: the stage-trained actor who won back-to-back Emmys for Taxi, another in 1992, and an Independent Spirit Award. His secret, I think, is that he plays eccentrics from the inside; the wild eyes always hide real warmth and logic. That he is still working past his mid-eighties, beloved by generations who quote his lines back at him, says everything about the goodwill his work has banked. An American original.

Christopher Allen Lloyd (born October 22, 1938) is an American actor. He has appeared in many theater productions, films, and television shows since the 1960s. He is known for portraying Emmett "Doc" Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990) and "Reverend" Jim Ignatowski in the comedy series Taxi (1978–1983), for which he won two Emmy Awards.
