My Take

Courtney Barnett is one of those artists I'd happily put on for anyone. That deadpan delivery paired with rambling, observational lyrics is a sound I don't think enough people pull off without sounding gimmicky, yet she makes it feel effortless and honest. Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit deserved every bit of attention it got, and the pile of 2015 ARIA Awards plus the Australian Music Prize tells you the recognition was real. I also like that she's a guitarist first, not just a vocalist. To me she represents a very Australian brand of unfussy, witty songwriting, and I find that refreshing.

Overview

Courtney Melba Barnett (born 3 November 1987) is an Australian singer, songwriter, and musician. Known for her deadpan singing style and witty, rambling lyrics, she attracted attention with the release of her debut EP I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris in 2012. International interest came with the release of her compilation album The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas in 2013.
