My Take
David Manners fascinates me because he played the human anchor in two of horror's foundational films, John Harker in Dracula (1931) and the archaeologist in The Mummy (1932). Holding the screen opposite a monster is thankless, underrated work, and he did it with quiet dignity. What I admire most, though, is that this University of Toronto graduate from Halifax walked away from Hollywood relatively early to write novels. In an industry that clings to fame, choosing the pen over the camera strikes me as a rare and graceful act of self-knowledge.
