My Take

Dexter Gordon is, for me, the sound of late-night cool made human. A bebop pioneer who never rushed a phrase, his big, unhurried tenor carries a worldly authority I never tire of. The nicknames, Long Tall Dexter, Sophisticated Giant, fit a man whose physical and musical presence both loomed large. What deepens my admiration is his second act: playing a jazz musician in Round Midnight with enough lived-in truth to land an Oscar nomination. Four decades on the bandstand left every note thick with experience, and I think few players ever made patience sound this commanding.
