Dome Narita

Dome Narita competed in the halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics. For most people that sentence would become the load-bearing fact of an entire life — the thing mentioned at every introduction, the identity to protect. Narita, born in 1985 in Suminoe-ku, Osaka, went a different way. After his snowboarding career he built a second one out of the things he actually likes: anime, manga, video games, hosting idol events, wotagei. He has done stage work and short films too. There is a quiet stubbornness in that choice. An Olympic credential is an easy platform for respectable commentary work, and plenty of former athletes take it. Turning instead toward fan culture — territory that the mainstream still treats as slightly embarrassing — means trading borrowed prestige for genuine interest. In 2015 he set up his own talent and event-planning company. But the underlying decision, to organize a life around what you find fun rather than what reads well on a name card, is harder than it looks and I respect it.
