Eric Melvin

Eric Melvin earns my respect for the least glamorous accomplishment in music: he stayed. As a NOFX founder who, with Fat Mike, was the only constant from beginning to end, he embodies the unsung labor of holding a band together across decades in a scene built on impermanence. Punk celebrates its frontmen, but it survives on its anchors, and Melvin is one. That he also moonlights as an entrepreneur hints at a pragmatism that probably kept things afloat. I tend to value the people who maintain a thing more than the ones who merely start it, and that is exactly his story.
