My Take

Frederick Delius captivates me as much for his life as his music. Born into a Bradford merchant family, he resisted commerce and found his calling instead while supposedly managing a Florida orange plantation, a beautifully unlikely origin for an English composer. Trained in Leipzig, he developed a dreamlike harmonic language that paints nature and nostalgia in shifting colour rather than dramatic gesture. What moves me most is his late perseverance: blind and paralysed, he completed works by dictation, sheer will distilled into sound. His 1929 Order of the Companions of Honour feels earned. He is a composer I prefer to absorb in stillness.
