My Take
George Roy Hill is one of those directors I keep returning to with affection. Pairing Paul Newman and Robert Redford in both Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting was a stroke of casting genius, and the Best Director Oscar for the latter feels entirely earned. What I love is his tone: witty, breezy, and unexpectedly tender, with melancholy threaded beneath the charm. From the Yale-educated Minneapolis native came films that range from screwball to science fiction, and that versatility impresses me. He died in 2002, but that ragtime whistle still plays in my head, which says everything.
