My Take
George Sanders remains one of my favourite screen presences. That smooth bass voice and clipped, upper-class English delivery made him the definitive sophisticated villain, never coarse, always quietly menacing. His Oscar-winning turn in All About Eve is a masterclass in elegant malice. At 189 cm he carried himself with a poisonous grace that few performers ever match. I also love that he was more than an actor, dabbling in singing, composition and a memorable autobiography. For me the most compelling villains are the ones with impeccable manners, and Sanders perfected that art. A truly timeless character actor.
