Hiyu Motoyama

I've got a real soft spot for guys like Hiyu Motoyama, who came up out of Higashiosaka, that gritty manufacturing town in Osaka where things get built by hand, and then grinded his way into pro baseball. The path he took kind of says it all to me: Saku Chosei High School and then Tohoku Fukushi University are both serious baseball pipelines, the sort of programs where you don't coast, you just put in the reps day after day. So I picture him less as the loud, flashy Osaka stereotype and more as the quiet craftsman type, the player who lets the results do the talking and saves his energy for the field. Born in 1998, still young, still writing his story. I'm rooting for him to keep digging in and grinding it out.
