My Take
Hoyte van Hoytema is, to me, one of the most important visual artists working in cinema today. A Dutch cinematographer born in Switzerland, his partnership with Christopher Nolan has turned the camera into a co-author—those handheld, film-shot IMAX frames in Oppenheimer were as much the story as the script. From the icy melancholy of Let the Right One In to the blinding desert of the Trinity test, he sculpts light with rare conviction. His 2024 sweep of the Oscar, BAFTA and ASC awards confirmed what many of us already felt. In a digital era, his stubborn devotion to film feels almost heroic.
