Ichiro Yatui

Ichiro Yatui, born in 1974 in Bunkyo, Tokyo, and hailing from Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, occupies a hybrid role that is more common now than it was when he started: comedian and disc jockey, in earnest, in both directions. Plenty of Japanese comedians talk about loving music. Far fewer actually stand behind the decks and hold a room for hours. The two crafts look adjacent but demand opposite things. Comedy delivers its verdict in about two seconds, applause or silence, no appeal. DJing works on a much slower clock, building an atmosphere the crowd only recognizes after it has already taken hold. Moving between those tempos for decades requires a kind of patience I associate more with organizers than with performers. A graduate of Soka University, he has stayed visible across a long career without relying on a single defining format. My read is that his real contribution has been closing the distance between Japan's comedy scene and its live music culture, less through spectacle than through simply showing up and building the room.
