My Take

iLoveMakonnen fascinates me because he captured a whole mood with a single song. "Tuesday" was a hazy, after-hours anthem, and once Drake hopped on the remix in 2014 it became inescapable. What strikes me is how he refuses to sit in one lane: rapper, singer, producer, songwriter, all at once, with a melodic delivery that blurs the line between crooning and rapping. People are quick to file him under one-hit-wonder, but I think that misses the point. Bottling the exact feeling of a particular night and making the world hum along is a rare gift, and he managed it on his own offbeat terms.
