My Take

Jared Kushner interests me less as a businessman than as a case study in proximity to power. Plenty of Harvard-educated financiers build investment and publishing ventures; almost none marry into a presidency and end up shaping foreign policy without ever holding elected office. Whatever you make of his politics, and people make wildly different things of them, the Grand Cross of the Aztec Eagle from Mexico hints that his quiet, deal-driven diplomacy was taken seriously abroad. He operates in silence where his in-laws operate at full volume, and that contrast, to me, is the most revealing thing about him.
