My Take

Alexey Ulyukaev fascinates me as a figure who sits at the intersection of scholarship and raw political power. A Moscow State economist turned banker, financier, and minister, he helped steer Russia's economy from the inside and collected the Order of Honour along the way. People who operate that close to the centre of state power, however, often find that glory and downfall are two sides of the same coin. I view technocrats like him with a mix of respect and unease: they wield theory and numbers to move whole nations, which is brilliant and a little chilling. Clearly no ordinary mind.
