My Take
Moebius — the pen name Jean Giraud adopted for his sci-fi and fantasy work — is one of those rare artists where you can look at a single line of his ink and immediately know it's him. His collaboration with Alejandro Jodorowsky on The Incal set a bar for psychedelic, philosophical comics that nobody has seriously cleared since. He shaped heavy metal aesthetics, influenced Ridley Scott's visual vocabulary for Alien, and basically invented what "cool" looks like in science fiction. France honored him with medals; the world owes him considerably more. Passed in 2012, but the work is very much alive.
