My Take
Jerry Goldsmith is, to me, the consummate craftsman of film music. Over 200 productions across nearly fifty years, an Academy Award, and yes, even a Razzie for worst song, which only makes him more human in my eyes. What strikes me is that film scoring is supposed to serve the picture invisibly, yet his music consistently rises off the screen and announces itself without overwhelming the story. A son of Los Angeles, the movie capital itself, he spent a lifetime holding up other people's narratives with nothing but sound. He makes me want to actually read the composer credit in every end roll.
