My Take

Joel Courtney is interesting to me as a case of two very different launches. He broke through young in 2011's Super 8, the kind of debut that could have defined him as a child-actor footnote, then he resurfaced years later anchoring Netflix's The Kissing Booth films for a whole new audience. That gap, and the comeback, is what I find compelling. A lot of early-career standouts simply vanish, so the fact that he found a second wave and made it stick says something about persistence. Born in Monterey in 1996, he feels like someone still writing his story.
