My Take
Joey DeMaio is one of those figures I think of when heavy metal gets dismissed as noise. Founding Manowar back in 1980 and serving as its bass player and main songwriter, he built a band on sheer conviction, loud and unapologetic. I find his control fascinating because he didn't just play; he ran the machine, launching Magic Circle Music to own the operation end to end. That ownership instinct tells me a lot about how seriously he takes the craft. Coming out of Auburn, New York, he turned a small-town start into a decades-long identity. Whatever you make of the volume, the commitment is real, and I respect that.
