My Take

John Mulaney strikes me as the rare comedian whose material reads as well as it plays. His years writing for Saturday Night Live, co-creating Stefon with Bill Hader, gave him an architect's sense of structure, and you can feel it in his stand-up: every sentence is load-bearing. I love that his Emmys honor his writing rather than any mugging for the camera; it confirms my sense that he is a craftsman first. There is something disarming about a man in a tailored suit delivering chaos with perfect diction. For me, he represents comedy as literature: precise, rereadable, and quietly devastating.
