My Take

Payne is one of those golden-age leading men who feels underappreciated today, partly because he refused to stay boxed in. He could croon his way through a Fox musical opposite Betty Grable or Alice Faye, then pivot to genuinely tough, fatalistic noir in films like Kansas City Confidential and 99 River Street. That noir run is where I think he is at his best, world-weary and physical in a way the musicals never asked of him. And of course Miracle on 34th Street keeps him on television every December, which is not a bad legacy for any actor.

John Payne (1912-1989) was an American film actor best known for his roles in 20th Century Fox musicals and for playing Fred Gailey in the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947). He later became closely associated with film noir and Westerns, and starred in the television series The Restless Gun. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
