Julia Louis-Dreyfus

For my money, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the greatest television comedian of her generation, full stop. Elaine Benes alone would secure a legacy; following it with Selina Meyer — a completely different register of comedy, vain, profane, razor-sharp — proves the first triumph was no accident. What I admire most is her total lack of vanity on screen: a Manhattan-born, Northwestern-educated performer willing to look utterly ridiculous in pursuit of the perfect beat. Seven Emmy wins for lead actress and the Mark Twain Prize only confirm what every comedy writer already knows — when she touches material, it simply gets funnier.
