Kengo Kōra

Kengo Kōra's resume reads like a case study in slow-burn credibility. He picked up the Yūjirō Ishihara Newcomer Award in 2010 and an Elan d'or newcomer prize in 2012, the kind of hardware that usually marks a young actor's ceiling rather than his floor. Then in 2014 he took the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actor. That jump, from promising newcomer to the person actually carrying the film, is the one most careers never make. Born in Kumamoto in 1987, he has never struck me as an actor who sells himself through personality or volume. He works through parts, and the parts accumulate. For anyone finding their way into Japanese cinema, his name is a useful signal: if he is in the cast, somebody made a deliberate decision about tone. I trust reputations built by directors more than reputations built by publicity, and his reads that way to me.
